United States confirm Mauricio Pochettino extension through 2030

The United States have confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino will remain as head coach until the 2030 World Cup, ending speculation that he could leave after the tournament held this summer.

The United States Soccer Federation has decided to continue with the project that began in 2024 after concluding that Pochettino’s work had laid the foundations for a more competitive men’s national team.

Although the hosts were eliminated by Belgium in the last 16, losing 4-1, the federation’s internal assessment of Pochettino’s performance was positive. Discussions over extending his contract had also started before the tournament.

The decision provides clarity over the future of the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager, who will now lead the United States into a new phase of their international development.

“Mauricio and his team believe in the future of football in the United States, and our new project allows us to build on the progress made by the United States men’s national team and the momentum enjoyed by the United States Soccer Federation,” said JT Batson, the federation’s chief executive and secretary general.

Wider role within US football

Pochettino’s renewed agreement gives him responsibilities beyond coaching the senior team. He will also be involved in the development of youth football, coach education and co-ordination with professional leagues across the country.

The expanded role is intended to make his work part of a broader federation structure, rather than limiting his influence to the men’s first team. His next assignment will be to take the United States another step towards competing at the highest level of international football.

“We know there is a lot of work ahead to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win men’s World Cups and working to make football the most widely played sport in every community,” said Pochettino.

“I am extremely pleased that Mauricio and his team are committed to collaborating with all of us to carry out the hard work required to achieve these ambitions.”

Pochettino began the United States project in 2024 and was appointed with the task of helping establish a more competitive team. Despite the heavy defeat by Belgium in the last 16, the federation judged that the overall direction of the work remained encouraging enough to justify continuity.

His extension represents a commitment to stability as the United States seek to strengthen their position as a footballing power. It also allows the federation to maintain the existing project rather than begin another change of direction after the World Cup.

The agreement means Pochettino is set to remain central to the United States’ plans through the 2030 World Cup, while also contributing to the wider growth of the sport through youth development, coaching and collaboration with the country’s professional competitions.
