Two Sudanese players from Asante Kotoko, AbdoelKarem Yagoub and Esmat Abdulhamid, have reportedly absconded from the team’s hotel in the USA, where they were staying ahead of a friendly match against DC United.
Kotoko had been set to face the Major League Soccer team on Saturday, October 12, 2024, after defeating Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup.
This match was part of the Ghana Week DC 2024 festivities, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with the GFA.
A group of seven players, including Yagoub, Abdulhamid, Samba O’Neil, Emmanuel Antwi, Elvis Kyei Baffour, Camara Mohammed, and Justice Blay, had already traveled to the USA with head coach Dr. Prosper Ogum Narteh, while the remaining players were expected to join them once their visas were secured.
However, after unsuccessful efforts to obtain visas for the rest of the squad, the club announced on Thursday that they were withdrawing from the competition.
Yagoub and Abdulhamid had asked for permission to exchange money, but their request was denied. CCTV footage later revealed that the players had left the hotel unnoticed, and their current location is unknown.
