EFL Championship match at the St. Mary’s Stadium

Southampton to win
Southampton remain at the sharp end of the EFL Championship promotion race as the season enters into its final few weeks. The Saints host Preston in midweek action, with a minimum of a playoff spot already assured, but still in without a shot of automatic promotion.
Russel Martin’s team have two games in hand over the sides around them, and wins in both matches, would put them level on points with third place Leeds United, with three to play. Three wins and a draw in their last four home matches places them as clear favourites against a Preston side without a win on the road in a month.
Both teams to score
That strong home form has featured defensive issues for Martin, as his team rely on outscoring the opposition to get key wins, and they have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last nine league outings. Preston have struggled for goals recently, only finding the back of the net in one of their last four matches, but Southampton have conceded an average of 1.32 goals per league game this season.
Preston over 2.5 cards
Preston have suffered their annual late season playoff wobble and it would take a major points swing to force them into the top six next month. As the frustration has started to kick in, the card counter has increased, with Ryan Lowe’s team joint fourth for the most EFL Championship yellow cards this season, on 97 from 42 games. They have picked up three in their last two matches and they will be looking to leave a mark on Southampton.
Che Adams to score anytime
Che Adams is gearing up for Scotland duty at Euro 2024 with a solid end to the domestic campaign. 13 league goals is his best ever return for the Saints with a goal scored in each of his last three starts as the man in form for Martin.
