The Lowdown: Fourth-round exit

The Black Cats were the hosts at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night as they welcomed Marco Silva’s outfit for their fourth-round replay, but suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat that saw them bow out of the competition and turn their attention back to the Championship.

The Northern Irishman, however, gave an impressive showing of himself, particularly in the closing stages of the tie when he prevented Tom Cairney from creating yet another golden opportunity despite being heavily outnumbered by the opposition.

The Latest: Bunting’s reaction

Taking to Twitter, Bunting couldn’t speak highly enough of Hume’s professionalism in that last-ditch tackle that momentarily kept Sunderland in the game. He wrote:

“That is incredible defending from Trai Hume, stops Tom Cairney playing the square pass. To come across and stop that in a 3 v 1 situation is utterly brilliant.”

The Verdict: Exciting prospect

Hume has only made seven league starts this season but he always catches the eye whenever he’s given the opportunity to play, and that was displayed again last night.

Tony Mowbray’s right-back currently ranks in the 99th percentile for most tackles and blocks made per 90 minutes and also has two assists to his name, highlighting his ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch.

Sunderland’s 20-year-old might have only made the switch to the northeast in January 2022 but he’s already shown that he’s got so much potential to give and will undoubtedly go on to become a massively important player for the club in years to come.
