The kind of football we played during my time with the national team we should have won something – Laryea Kingston

In a nostalgic journey through time, former Ghanaian international footballer Laryea Kingston revisited the glory days of the national team, reminiscing about the formidable midfield quartet that still echoes in the hearts of football fans across the nation.

Comprising the stellar talents of Laryea Kingston himself, Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, and Stephen Appiah, this quartet is often hailed as Ghana’s finest midfield assembly.

For Kingston, however, the reminiscence is bittersweet. “The kind of football we played during my time with the national team, we should have won something,” he remarked in a recent interview. The sentiment resonates with a widespread belief among Ghanaians that this quartet represented the pinnacle of football prowess for the nation. The mere mention of their names evokes memories of skillful tackles, precise passes, and the sheer dominance they exhibited on the pitch.

Yet, despite their undeniable quality, there is a lingering question that haunts this golden era: why didn’t Ghana break its 40 years AFCON trophy jinx during this formidable period?

“Yes for me I think every player’s aim is to win something the kind of football we played that time we should have won something the one that Ghana hosted we were that close to winning it,” he told Sienu TV on Youtube.

“But for me sometimes some situations can change and the team becomes weak I remember our semi finals against Cameroon we lost John Mensah, Michael Essien have played in the middle throughout for a long time even though Michael Essien was a center back he moved to Europe and played as a number 6.

“Playing for Chelsea he never played as a center back for years we lost him and then we have to force Michael Essien to play at the back we dominated the play but because he is human his instinct told him I am still in the middle so he carried the ball he came forward and lost that space Eto’o got the ball and he played through there and that was the only goal of the game.

“So sometimes scenarios can determine the out come of the game so for me that was what cost us and when you watch the build up to the Nations Cup that was the only game we lost,”
