Team Ghana have rejected reports that some of their athletes have gone missing in Glasgow, with media attache Charles Osei Asibey insisting that no member of the delegation has absconded during the Commonwealth Games.
Asibey said every athlete had been officially transported to the Games village and remained under the supervision of the Ghanaian delegation.
His comments came after claims circulated on social media suggesting that some Ghanaian competitors had gone AWOL during the ongoing event in Scotland. The reports prompted speculation about the whereabouts of members of Team Ghana, but Asibey said the delegation was monitoring the situation and was in a position to account for its accredited athletes.
“We took them there, and until we speak, people cannot just speculate,” he said.
Asibey also called on the public to avoid sharing unverified information, making clear that reports about the team should not be treated as fact unless they had been confirmed by the delegation.
He said Team Ghana was keeping track of all accredited athletes and officials in Glasgow. Any formal update on the matter, he added, would be issued through the delegation rather than through speculation circulating online.
The clarification is intended to calm concerns about Ghana’s participation at the Games, where the country’s athletes are continuing to compete across various disciplines.
With the team’s campaign still under way, officials are focused on supporting the athletes and ensuring the delegation’s successful participation in Glasgow. The media attache’s statement was aimed at drawing a clear distinction between confirmed information from Team Ghana and claims that had emerged on social media.
There has been no indication from the delegation that any athlete or official is unaccounted for. Instead, Asibey’s remarks emphasised that the athletes were taken to the Games village through official arrangements and remained subject to the oversight of Team Ghana.
The delegation’s position is that the claims of missing Ghanaian athletes are unfounded. It also wants future information about the team’s members and activities to come directly from authorised officials, rather than from unverified reports.
Ghana’s athletes will therefore continue their involvement in the various competitions in Glasgow while Team Ghana’s officials monitor the delegation and manage communication surrounding its participation.
