Real Sociedad have confirmed the signing of 21-year-old Japanese winger Takefusa Kubo on a permanent basis.
Famously compared to Lionel Messi in his youth, Kubo joined Real Madrid in 2019 but never actually played for the first team, instead spending time out on loan with Villarreal, Getafe and Mallorca – the latter of whom he joined twice.
After four loan spells away, Kubo’s time in Madrid has come to a close as Real Sociedad have confirmed his arrival on a permanent deal.
Real were keen to part ways with Kubo this summer in order to comply with La Liga’s non-EU regulations, but the league champions have not yet given up on the winger and have constructed this deal to give them a chance to re-sign him in the future.
Sociedad are understood to have paid around €6.5m for 50% of the rights to Kubo, with Real also retaining the ability to buy Kubo back at any point over the next five seasons.
Those in charge at Santiago Bernabeu hope that Kubo replicates the success of Martin Odegaard, who blossomed into a star on loan with Sociedad in the 2019/20 season before returning and ultimately being sold on to Arsenal.
