Sunderland promoted to the Championship

Former Premier League side Sunderland gained promotion to the English Championship following their 2-0 win over Wycombe in Wembley on Saturday.

Goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart did the magic for Sunderland who have been in the League for the past four seasons.

Embleton gave them a 12th-minute lead after blasting his effort from outside the area before Stewart’s 26th goal of the season – his fifth against Wycombe – gave Sunderland a cushion with 11 minutes to go; the Black Cats now joining Wigan and Rotherham in the English second tier next season.

Veteran striker Adebayo Akinfenwa came on for Wycombe in the final game of his career, but the 40-year-old was unable to change the outcome.
