Southampton 1-2 Liverpool: Reds comeback win takes title race to the wire

Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday night to take the Premier Lague title race to the wire.

Jurgen Klopp had made nine changes to the side that beat Chelsea last weekend to win the FA Cup and the decision seemed to have been costly when they found themselves down after 13 minutes when Southampton capitalized to take the lead through Nathan Redmond with the hosts’ only shot of the half, albeit with the help of a deflection off James Milner.

The goal left the visitors incensed as they felt Diogo Jota was fouled in the build-up but they were back 14 minutes later through Takumi Minamino who spent six months at the same Stadium last season; the Japanese blasting a powerful effort inside the near right post from close range.

While Southampton worked hard to regain their lead, Liverpool reminded them of their class When Matip put them into the lead 23 minutes before the final whistle. The taker of the FA Cup’s winning penalty, Kostas Tsimikas, whipped in a cross that was headed on by Mohamed Elyounoussi, and in turn was instinctively headed in by Joël Matip to complete the turnaround.

Defeated in seven of their previous 10 matches, the home side was unable to muster an equalizer despite a late burst of confidence, leaving them still in search of the one point that would mathematically secure safety.
