Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola may have a major decision to make about his future if the club opts to cash in on in-form forward Antoine Semenyo during the January transfer window, according to football finance expert Dr. Dan Plumley.
Semenyo, who has a £65 million release clause, is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs. With Bournemouth already selling three key defenders in the summer, another high-profile departure could reshape the team just months into the season.
Speaking to Football Insider, Plumley noted that Iraola will be closely monitoring how the club’s transfer strategy fits with his long-term ambitions.
“We probably have to track that back a bit further and look at the summer,” he said. “They sold three of their four main defenders — good fees, but they lost a large part of their back line and have had to rebuild.”
“Semenyo is the next one. The manager is looking at that. But they’ve also opened a new, state-of-the-art training facility, which shows progress elsewhere.”
Plumley added that while Bournemouth appear stable in the Premier League, consistently selling first-team players could eventually push Iraola to reassess his position.
“If they get into a model of regularly selling players for good fees, the manager has to decide how that aligns with his philosophy. He might even consider a move elsewhere.”
He stressed that Iraola’s future will also depend on Bournemouth’s final league position and what happens with Semenyo in January.
Bournemouth’s current six-game winless run capped by a 0-0 draw with Chelsea has dropped them to 13th, though they remain only five points from the European spots. Last season’s ninth-place finish raised expectations, and losing Semenyo mid-season could be a turning point.
Semenyo has been one of Bournemouth’s most influential performers this campaign, scoring six league goals and remaining central to their attacking play.
