Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has opened up on his decision to join Manchester City instead of rivals Manchester United during the January transfer window, pointing to the quality of coaching, squad depth and playing style as the key reasons behind his move.
United had initially expressed interest in the attacker early in the winter window when Rúben Amorim was still in charge at Old Trafford. However, a period of instability followed, with Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick temporarily overseeing the team as the club experimented with tactical changes, including a switch back to a back-four system. Despite injuries and limited natural wide options, United ultimately did not pursue the deal further.
Semenyo, who later sealed a move to City, revealed he carefully weighed his options before making the final call.
“I was very quiet, praying a lot and making sure I made the right decision,” he said in comments reported by City Xtra. “The environment is very important. You want top coaches, top players, and a healthy setting. That’s what drew me to Man City.”
The Ghana international also highlighted how City’s tactical system aligns perfectly with his strengths, giving him the freedom to attack space and get into scoring positions.
“I’m enjoying it. I’m in a system that helps me get through on goal and shoot in the box. That’s what I want,” Semenyo added.
Since arriving, the forward has quickly settled, with his pace and direct style fitting seamlessly into City’s fluid attacking setup.
