Scotland captain Andrew Robertson has apologized to his country after their aim of making it to the last round of the World Cup Qualifiers were dented by war-torn Ukraine.

Scotland went 3-1 down in front of their home fans and will hence miss a place in Qatar 2022 and Robertson admitted it was disappointing to miss the showpiece.

“It’s hugely disappointing. We have waited a long time for this game and our performances beforehand have been really good but, to be honest, we didn’t really show up. Ukraine settled into the game quicker than us and that continued.

“We knew they were going to get tired and that was the case but we gave ourselves too much of an uphill battle. We were pushing at the end and left ourselves open to the counterattack, but you have to do that. We didn’t play the way we wanted to and that’s the most disappointing thing.

“All we can say is sorry to the fans in here and back home for disappointing them,” said Scotland skipper Robertson.

Goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk had put a confident and dominant Ukraine 2-0 up before Callum McGregor pulled a goal back for the Scots in the 79th minute but deep into stoppage time substitute Artem Dovbyk finished off a counterattack to secure the victory.
