In a match that turned sour for the Columbus Crew, Ghanaian-born American midfielder Derrick Jones Amaniampong was sent off in the 26th minute, leading to a 2-0 defeat against Charlotte FC in the MLS.

Jones entered the game as a substitute for Rudy Camacho in the 18th minute at the Bank of America Stadium.

The early red card for Jones put Columbus on the back foot, and despite a missed penalty by Charlotte’s Iuri Tavares in the first half, the home team capitalized on their numerical advantage.

Ashley Westwood scored a stunning goal from outside the box in the 83rd minute, and Ghanaian striker Patrick Agyemang sealed the victory with a left-footed shot six minutes later, assisted by Djibril Diani.

Ghanaian winger Yaw Yeboah played the first half for Columbus, but the team’s efforts were not enough to overcome the disadvantage.

Columbus Crew was managed by Irish-born Ghanaian assistant coach Patrick Kwame Ampadu.

Derrick Jones has played three games in the 2024 Major League Soccer.
