Sunderland reporter Phil Smith has suggested that Light Blues target Ross Stewart appears likely to put pen to paper on a new contract with the English Championship side.
The journalist has quoted Black Cats manager Alex Neil as stating that the club will sort out the 26-year-old’s situation, as he currently has one year left on his contract.
Smith tweeted: #SAFC seem hopeful Ross Stewart will sign a new deal at the club. AN spoke to him recently, said he was ‘content & looking forward to the season’. Added: ‘I’m pretty sure that’ll get resolved’.”
Supporters will be gutted
Rangers have been touted with interest in the Scotland international this summer, and Ibrox supporters will now be gutted that Stewart looks likely to commit his future to the Championship club.
Signing a fresh deal with Sunderland would make a move to Glasgow seem extremely unlikely, as it shows that he willing to remain on Wearside and help Neil’s team this season in their potential surge to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing Kemar Roofe from the Gers, and that would leave Gio van Bronckhorst with Alfredo Morelos and Antonio Colak as his only natural centre-forward options.
Therefore, Stewart could be an excellent replacement for the Jamaica international, and that is why Rangers fans will be gutted by the prospect of him putting pen to paper on a new contract with the Black Cats.
The Scotsman enjoyed a sublime campaign in League One in 2021/22 as he helped to fire Sunderland back up to the Championship. He found the net a whopping 26 times in 49 outings as he proved that he has the quality to score on a regular basis.
Stewart also showcased his creativity as he provided his team-mates with nine ‘big chances’ and registered three assists in the third tier of English football.
This shows that he has the ability to be a complete forward at the top end of the pitch, as he is able to finish off opportunities for himself whilst also linking up the play to help his fellow attackers.
Therefore, Rangers fans must be gutted to learn that the 26-year-old looks set to stay at Sunderland instead of moving to Glasgow this summer.
