PSV want transfer record shattered if Leeds are to move for Cody Gakpo

PSV want record-breaking fee as Leeds United continue dialogue with Cody Gakpo

The Eredivisie could be set to lose yet another top young talent this summer as Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven may have to contend with the loss of starlet winger Cody Gakpo as Leeds United remain interested in the young international.

Gakpo, 23, is an Eindhoven-native and joined the club at the age of eight back in 2007 after beginning his youth education with EVV Eindhoven, and has risen to become one of the most highly-touted youngsters in the Dutch top flight after hitting 12-goals and adding 13-assists in the league in what was a phenomenal 2021-22 campaign.

Such was his form that multiple clubs have expressed interest in Gakpo, including Premier League giants Arsenal, but Leeds persist in their interest in the winger but according to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad, will have to stump up a large fee to prize him away from the Philips Stadion.

With Leeds nearly set to part ways with Brazilian ace Raphinha this summer amid interest from Chelsea as well as Arsenal, the club could immediately reinvest the balance of the rumored ~£65million they could be set to receive in a move for Gakpo, who PSV hope would leave for a fee greater than what they netted when they sold Mexican star Hirving Lozano in 2019, which saw Eindhoven bank about £35million.

Though PSV would prefer to retain Gakpo for another year as the club looks to hunt down bitter rivals AFC Ajax, Leeds would likely not balk at the free in their bid to continue to reinforce the first-team squad under Jesse Marsch after the Whites have already added Brendan Aaronson, Marc Roca, and Rasmus Kristensen this summer.
