Police in Ghana’s Northern Region have opened an investigation after the bodies of two women were discovered in a room at the Cab Hospitality Hotel in Tamale.
The women were found on Monday, 3 August, following a report from the hotel’s management, according to the Northern Regional Police Command.
Officers attended the hotel in the Gbewa Residential Area after receiving the report and found the bodies inside one of the rooms. The two women are believed to be nationals of Benin, although their identities have not yet been formally confirmed.
The Northern Regional Police Command said in a statement issued on Tuesday, 4 August, that the remains had been taken to the mortuary at Tamale Teaching Hospital. They will be preserved there while arrangements are made for post-mortem examinations.
Those examinations are expected to help determine how the women died. Police have not announced a cause of death and said their inquiries remain at an early stage.
Investigators are also working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. A further priority is to formally identify the deceased and liaise with the relevant authorities so that their families can be notified.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has responded by sending a specialist team from National Police Headquarters to assist the Northern Regional Police Command. The team includes investigators, intelligence officers and crime scene experts.
The deployment is intended to support the regional command and help speed up the investigation. Police have not disclosed whether anyone has been arrested or identified as a suspect in connection with the deaths.
The statement did not provide further details about when the women arrived at the hotel, how long they had been in the room or who first raised concerns about them. Police said the investigation would establish those circumstances.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public who may have credible information to come forward. Information can be provided by calling the emergency numbers 191 or 18555, or by reporting directly to the nearest police station.
The appeal is aimed at gathering evidence that could assist officers in determining what happened at the hotel and in confirming the identities of the two women.
The bodies will remain at Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary pending preservation and the post-mortem process. The Northern Regional Police Command said its investigation is continuing.
