Prince Osei Owusu scored his 10th Major League Soccer goal of the season as CF Montreal came from behind to draw with New England Revolution on Saturday.
The Ghanaian striker produced the equaliser to earn Montreal a valuable point and preserve their unbeaten outcome in a match in which New England had taken the lead.
Owusu once again demonstrated why he has become such an important figure in Montreal’s attack. The 28-year-old led the line with purpose after his side fell behind, using his movement, strength and positioning to create problems for the New England defence.
As Montreal increased the pressure, Owusu continued to look for opportunities inside the penalty area. His work eventually brought a reward when he found room in the box and finished calmly to bring the visitors level.
The goal changed the feel of the contest. Montreal grew in confidence after cancelling out New England’s advantage and pushed forward in search of a winning goal. However, New England Revolution defended resolutely during the closing stages and prevented Montreal from completing the comeback.
Both sides therefore had to settle for a share of the points, with Owusu’s finish ensuring Montreal avoided defeat after falling behind.
Reaching 10 MLS goals represents another significant milestone in what has been one of the most productive campaigns of Owusu’s career. His contribution has made him one of CF Montreal’s most dependable attacking players and has underlined his influence on the team’s performances this season.
The forward has offered Montreal a combination of physical strength, aerial ability and intelligent movement. He has also shown composure in front of goal, qualities which have made him a consistent threat for opposing defences.
His equaliser against New England was another example of the role he has taken on since joining the club. Owusu has been relied upon to lead the attack, provide an outlet under pressure and make effective use of opportunities in the penalty area.
Before moving to Major League Soccer, Owusu played for VfB Stuttgart, Arminia Bielefeld, SC Paderborn and Maccabi Netanya. That European experience has added to his value since arriving at CF Montreal, where he has established himself as a key attacking presence.
The latest goal further emphasised his importance as Montreal seek a strong finish to the season. While his effort was not enough to secure all three points, it enabled the team to recover from a difficult position and leave with a result.
For Owusu, the strike continued an outstanding individual campaign and took his MLS tally into double figures. For CF Montreal, it provided the response required after New England Revolution had moved in front and ensured the visitors returned with a point.
