A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck most of Egypt’s governorates in the early hours of Monday, with Al Ahly forward Ahmed Sayed Zizo the only sports personality identified as having reacted to the tremor.
The earthquake occurred at about 03:00 local time and was felt across wide areas of the country. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said the epicentre was located 38 kilometres north of Suez.
Egypt’s Ministry of Health said its field monitoring teams had recorded only a limited number of minor injuries. Those injuries were treated, and no deaths were reported.
The strength of the earthquake prompted a large response on social media, where many users shared their experiences and commented on the tremor during the early-morning hours.
Artists were among the most prominent public figures to engage with the event online. However, sports personalities were largely absent from the reaction, with Zizo the only figure from the sporting world mentioned in connection with the earthquake.
The incident affected most of Egypt’s governorates, according to the report, although the available information did not indicate any fatalities or serious injuries resulting from the quake.
The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics provided the details of the earthquake’s strength and location, while the Ministry of Health offered the update on its impact on people.
The tremor’s timing, shortly after 03:00, led to widespread discussion online as members of the public responded to what they had felt. Social media users were among those who drew attention to the earthquake, while public reactions from artists followed.
Within football and the wider sporting community, however, there was no comparable wave of response. Zizo’s reaction stood out because he was the only sports figure cited in the report.
The earthquake therefore became both a major public event and a prominent subject of online discussion, while the response from sports figures remained notably limited. The Ministry of Health’s field assessment indicated that the immediate human impact was restricted to minor injuries, with those affected receiving treatment and no deaths recorded.
