Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, has admitted that the decision to retain Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach was a difficult one.
Despite widespread criticism following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the GFA’s Executive Council (ExCo) ultimately decided to keep Addo in charge.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum disclosed that there was deep division among council members regarding the coach’s future.
“It was a very tense atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team. Not all of them said yes. It was very, very difficult,” he said.
“I sat there for hours, and still, it got to the point where there was a stalemate, so the meeting had to be adjourned and reconvened. It was tough.”
“It was not just a straightforward decision that after hearing from him or listening to him, we want to say yes or we are all saying yes to his continuous stay in office or otherwise. It was very tough.”
With his position now secured, Addo faces a crucial test when the Black Stars regroup in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where he will aim to silence his critics.
