Official: Manchester City complete second summer signing as Ortega joins

Manchester City have completed their second signing of the summer, as goalkeeper Stefan Ortega joins the club on a free transfer from German side Arminia Bielefeld.

The goalkeeper, who arrives as a free transfer following the end of his contract in the Bundesliga, will play a backup role to current and undisputed no.1 Ederson, and will allow US shot-stopper Zach Steffen to leave on loan in search of first team football.

Ortega has spent almost his entire career with Bielefeld, helping them progress from the third division of German football all the way to the top flight, though he could not prevent their relegation in 21/.22.

Nonetheless, he racked up 220 appearances for the German side across a decade with the senior side, while he also represented them at youth level too.

“This is a fantastic move for me,” Ortega told the Manchester City website. “Manchester City are an amazing team – a squad with world-class quality in every area. To be given the chance to join this group of players and help continue the Club’s success is a dream for me.”

“I have enjoyed my time in Germany and I want to thank the Arminia Bielefeld fans for their support. But this new challenge of coming to City and playing in the Premier League is too good for me to ignore.

“I can’t wait to get started, meet my teammates and begin working with Pep and his backroom staff.”

Phillips to follow

Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips is set to become the third arrival at the Etihad this summer, after a deal was agreed with Leeds United for a fee of around £42m. The Englishman is expected to have his medical on Friday before being announced by the club.

Following his arrival, Pep Guardiola and co. will turn their attentions to a left back, with Brighton’s Marc Cucurella thought to be the main target.
