Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has disclosed that he was not surprised when Arsenal appointed Mikel Arteta as manager.
Arteta, who took over the reigns as Gunners’ manager in 2019 was teammates with Frimpong who announced his retirement in March 2019 due to injury.
The Spaniard was an Arsenal player from 2011 to 2016 and captained the club towards the end of his playing days.
“No surprise, he was the type of person that I knew would be manager one day as he never stopped, never stopped learning.
“I remember we used to call him ‘Wenger’s son’ because every time we would go out on the training ground he would be there with Wenger talking,” Frimpong told Daily Star Sports.
“He was always asking him questions and he was someone that wasn’t afraid to ask and learn. It’s no surprise that he has become a manager to be honest.”
Frimpong, who started his career at Arsenal made only six senior appearances for the club.
The 30-year-old came through Arsenal’s youth academy before loan spells in England with Wolves, Charlton, Fulham and Barnsley.
