Nationality Switch: ‘Inaki, not Nico, to commit to Ghana now’

Athletic Bilbao striker Iñaki Williams is set to become the first of the Williams brothers to play for the Ghana senior national team.

This follows a visit to the duo at their base in Bilbao by Kurt E.S Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) back in April and a subsequent visit by the brothers to the country on week-long holidays.

Top sources indicate from what have been described as very successful talks, Iñaki would switch international allegiance to Ghana now while his younger brother Nico may join later.

Iñaki has only featured for Spain once in May 2016 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly game.

That was a couple of months after Ghana started courting the 28-year-old. Former Black Stars coach Avram Grant led the charge by holding phone conversations with the player.

And it has been six years of neglect since then by La Roja for Iñaki.

In 2021, the 28-year-old told the Guardian in an interview that he is still hopeful of becoming a regular.

But the April conversations with the GFA boss have finally convinced Inaki and his advisors with the player wrapping up his holidays in Ghana with a visit to the GFA Headquarters earlier this week.

The current Fifa provisions make Iñaki eligible for a switch.

Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Otto Addo has asked all foreign-born players of Ghanaian descent being courted for the Black Stars to make their decision by next week as they will have to be involved in the September window.
