Mozambique’s President Daniel Francisco Chapo has unveiled a major financial incentive to spur the national team ahead of their Round of 16 encounter with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Each player and member of the technical team stands to receive 500,000 meticais if the Mambas manage to overcome the Super Eagles and book a quarter-final place.
The pledge was made shortly after Mozambique sealed qualification to the knockout phase as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Despite ending the group stage with a 2-1 loss to Cameroon in Group F, the Mambas did enough to progress, an achievement the president described as historic for the nation.
Local outlet Jornal Notícias reports that the bonus is intended to reward the squad’s discipline, courage, and resilience throughout the group matches.
Nigeria, however, present a formidable challenge after emerging as one of the most convincing sides in the competition.
The Super Eagles won all their group games, including victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, underlining their title credentials.
Mozambique now face a stern test against a side widely tipped to go deep in the tournament. Still, the promised incentive adds extra motivation as the Mambas chase a place in the last eight.
