The Moroccan Football Federation is reportedly seeking a postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to a congested football calendar, according to Africasoccer.com.
CAF’s flagship women’s tournament is scheduled to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, with 16 nations expected to compete for the continental title. However, the competition now faces uncertainty as the host nation prepares to submit a formal request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) citing several pressing commitments.
Morocco’s request is largely driven by the need to conclude the domestic league season on schedule — set to end on May 15, 2026 — while also allocating adequate time and resources toward preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The federation believes the overlapping responsibilities could stretch logistical and technical capacities.
The upcoming edition of WAFCON will be historic, marking the first time 16 teams will participate in the tournament. Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Mali received invitations to join the competition despite missing out on automatic qualification.
Defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the most successful side in the tournament’s history with ten titles, and they will be aiming to retain their crown on North African soil.
