Mohammed Fuseini has made a strong case for another Ghana call-up after putting a traumatic robbery and assault in Brussels behind him to return immediately to action for Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 24-year-old forward was attacked by armed robbers, who took his valuables and left him with minor injuries. Despite the ordeal, Fuseini quickly resumed training and was named in the starting line-up against Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup just days later.
His response has highlighted the mentality that could make him an increasingly valuable option for the Black Stars. Rather than allowing the incident to interrupt his preparations, Fuseini has remained focused on football and continued working towards the new season.
That determination has been matched by his performances during pre-season. He has scored four goals in three matches, underlining his sharpness and suggesting he is ready to contribute at the start of the campaign.
Fuseini’s progress has been steady since he left Ghana to pursue a career in European football. He developed at Sturm Graz in Austria before producing a prolific loan spell with Randers in Denmark. He has since established himself at Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.
Across his senior club career, Fuseini has made 139 competitive appearances and scored 35 goals, while also providing several assists. He has won the Belgian Pro League and the Belgian Cup with Union Saint-Gilloise, and has gained experience in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
That background has given him exposure to some of the highest levels of European competition. His pace, movement and work rate make him a forward capable of offering Ghana a different attacking threat, while his finishing has continued to develop during his time abroad.
Fuseini has already had an impact in Ghana colours. He has won two senior caps for the Black Stars and scored one goal, showing that he can make a difference when given the opportunity.
His ability to recover so quickly from a frightening personal experience has added another dimension to his case. International football places significant demands on players, both physically and mentally, and Fuseini’s response demonstrated resilience, professionalism and determination.
