Former Ghanaian footballer Michael Essien has revealed that he was approached by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to become the assistant coach of the Black Stars but declined the offer, stating that he didn’t feel ready for the role.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Essien explained that he was contacted by GFA President Kurt Okraku and Otto Addo, who was reappointed as head coach in March 2024.
However, Essien, who currently serves as an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland, felt that he needed more time to develop his coaching skills.
“I would not say I refused, but I was just not ready for that job,” he told Sporty FM.
“I was approached by Otto Addo and the president [Kurt Okraku], but I felt I was not ready,” he added.
“It’s sad I couldn’t win any trophy during my playing days with the Black Stars, but I am convinced the team will win a trophy soon.”
In related news, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Joseph Laumann has been replaced by Desmond Ofei as an assistant coach.
