Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to remain manager of the United States men’s national team until 2030, extending his tenure after guiding the co-hosts to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The former Tottenham and Chelsea manager has been in charge since September 2024. Under his leadership, the United States finished top of their World Cup group after victories over Paraguay and Australia.
They then defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the last 32 before Belgium ended their tournament with a 4-1 victory in the last 16.
US Soccer said the new agreement would expand the responsibilities of Pochettino and his coaching staff beyond the senior men’s team. Their remit will include helping to “advise and support US Soccer on the broader development of the full national team pathway, youth soccer, coaching education, professional league collaboration and other technical facets”.
The extension means Pochettino will remain central to the development of the United States’ wider football structure, as well as continuing to lead the national team.
“Working together with US Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men’s national team programme even stronger,” said Pochettino.
“We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of US Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the federation.
“We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field.”
Pochettino’s first major tournament with the United States included both impressive performances and controversy. The team progressed from their group with a 100% record before beating Bosnia-Herzegovina in the knockout stage.
Their campaign ended against Belgium, who scored four times in a 4-1 win.
The United States also featured in one of the tournament’s most contentious incidents when striker Folarin Balogun was sent off against Bosnia-Herzegovina. He avoided a suspension after an intervention from US President Donald Trump.
US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said Pochettino had created a strong environment within the squad and praised the influence of his coaching team.
“Mauricio has built a culture where players trust the group, trust the process and trust each other,” said Parlow Cone.
“We saw the impact of that belief in the way the team grew, competed and performed on the world’s biggest stage.
“That culture, and the staff who helped build it, are exactly what we want to continue investing in for the men’s national team now and for the future.”
