Manchester United to open talks with Watford over Daniel Bachmann

Manchester United open discussions with Watford for goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann

The new Erik ten Hag regime at Old Trafford has yet to begin its summer transfer reinforcement plans in earnest thus far, but Manchester United could be in line to make a move for Austrian international goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann to kick things off under the Dutch manager.

Reports via transfer insider Fabrizio Romano suggest that Bachmann is now on the radar screen at United to take a backup role to first-choice shot-stopper David De Gea, with the Hornets willing to listen to offers only involving a full deal for the 27-year-old.

United are in the hunt for a number two man behind De Gea as current backup Dean Henderson seems destined for a move to Nottingham Forest this summer, and Bachmann could potentially fit the bill for Ten Hag given his experience both at club level but also being a reliable performer for Austria across his thirteen international caps.

Bachmann featured in every minute of Austria’s run to the quarterfinals at Euro 2020 last summer and was a key presence as Unsere Burschen so nearly took Italy to penalties before a 2-1 loss in extra time.

His thirteen clean sheets for Watford in just 23 appearances in the Championship during the 2020-21 campaign stand as impressive, but he only played a bit-part role for the Hornets last season in the Premier League while managing just twelve starts in the top fight of English football.

But with a current market value of ~£2million (via Transfermarkt), minimal financial commitment for an experienced number two could still be a decent piece of business by United overall given their continued interest in Frenkie de Jong and other potential summer targets.
