Manchester United exit? Cristiano Ronaldo contacted by AS Roma

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo has seen himself linked with Serie A side AS Roma this weekend.

Reports stemming from Rome-based newspaper Il Messaggero claim that the recently crowned Europa Conference League side have been in contact with the Portuguese.

And whilst Roma may struggled to afford the 37-year-old’s mammoth wages, getting Ronaldo off their books a year before his deal is due to expire may have some benefit to United as they look to usher in a new era under Erik ten Hag.

However, when he was asked about Ronaldo’s future recently, Ten Hag seemed to be keen on keeping CR7 around:

“Ronaldo is a giant, because of what he’s already shown and I think he’s still very ambitious,” Ten Hag said.

“Of course I would like to keep him. He’s been very important to Manchester United this year and can produce great statistics.”

Jamie Carragher, on the other hand, has offered a different view on the situation, claiming Ten Hag needs to ship out the veteran forward.

Using Jurgen Klopp’s selling of Christian Benteke as an example, Carragher said: “I’m convinced he’s (Ten Hag) got to do that with Ronaldo, whether he’s allowed to or not, and I’ve said this consistently throughout this season, that was not a good signing.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time, and I’m seen as criticising him – Ronaldo is a million times better than I could ever be, I couldn’t lace his boots, obviously, but I’m not saying that to be disrespectful to him, he’s amazing.

“But Ronaldo has never played in a team this bad, he’s played in some of the best teams and has the attitude of wanting to be the main man, trying to get the goals, driving people on, and when you’re in a great team, that’s something I’m seeing as a positive.

“When you’re not playing in a great team it can be something that is seen as a negative, and I think it has been a negative this season. Manchester United can’t go into next season with a centre forward who is going to be 38, even if he does score goals that’s not right for Man United.”
