Lower expectations; the rebuilding of the Black Stars will take time – Asamoah Gyan tells Ghanaians –

Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to have lower expectations of the Black Stars because, despite qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he believes the team is not at the level that opponents fear.

Gyan claims that the team is in the process of rebuilding, which will take some time.

The Black Stars were eliminated from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in the first round earlier this year, marking their worst-ever performance in the competition.

They made amends in March, however, by qualifying for Qatar at the expense of sworn rivals Nigeria.

“For me, my advice is to lower our expectations for now and then build the new team. We know we are Ghana, and we have done it before, but maybe the players who are not involved are not ready enough, so we should give them time to make sure they get there.

“It is very difficult when you put pressure, so the fans have to be calm,” the Ghana legend said on the Joy FM on Monday.

Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku has said the Black Stars will use the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June and September to continue building a competitive Black Stars team for the World Cup.

Ghana has been drawn in Group H of the World Cup, along with Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.
