Liverpool go top in the league after record-setting win away at Newcastle

Liverpool set new club record in vital win against Newcastle

Liverpool are top of the Premier League – although only on a temporary basis – after Jürgen Klopp’s Reds came away from Tyneside with all three points in a narrow 1-0 win at St. James’ Park against an in-form Newcastle in the lunchtime kickoff.

Malian international Naby Keïta bagged the only goal of the match in the northeast of England, after Diogo Jota turned provider in the 19th-minute, proving enough to help Liverpool leapfrog league rivals Manchester City in a dominant display that should have ended in a wider margin.

It was no more than Liverpool deserved on the day, and the same can be said for the fact that they traveled back to Merseyside sitting top of the table amid a 15-match unbeaten run, besting their 10-match run from the beginning of the 2021-22 league campaign. In the process, the Reds secured their forty-second win of the season in all competitions, which now stands as a new club record.

Liverpool have gone on a magnificent run in the month of April under boss Klopp. The club have earned seven wins and fought to two draws both at home and abroad, which included getting past SL Benfica in their two-legged Champions League quarter-final, taking control of their semi-final showdown with Villarreal, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, and dispatching bitter rival duo Everton and Manchester United in back-to-back Premier League performances.

In securing a 1-0 win on the road this afternoon, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is now credited with twenty clean sheets this season, making him the first shot-stopper across Europe’s top-five leagues to achieve that milestone in 2021-22.

Most impressively, Liverpool can now boast that only three other top-flight English clubs have won more matches across a season than them; Everton (43 in 1984-85), Manchester City (44 in 2017-18, 47 in 2020-21, 50 in 2018-19), and Manchester United (44 in 2008-09).

With time left to increase their tally and hopefully beat-out City to the league title in the process, what could be a fairytale season for Jürgen Klopp and company continues to roll on.
