National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has jokingly offered to become acting chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the opposition party is weak and disorganised.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah, widely known as General Mosquito, made the offer during an exclusive interview with Ambassador TV host Osei Kwadwo. The interview was monitored by MyNewsGH.com.
His comments focused on what he described as a lack of effective leadership within the NPP, Ghana’s largest opposition party.
“It is dangerous when the largest opposition party like the NPP lacks leadership. It is making the party weak and unpopular. That is not good for our politics and democracy,” he said.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah said he would be willing to serve as the NPP’s acting chairman if he were given the opportunity.
The NDC chairman also criticised the NPP’s response to the 20-year sentence handed to its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
He argued that a serious political party would not mobilise its members to support a person facing such circumstances.
“Assuming Chairman Wontumi were a member of the NDC and I was National Chairman, I would never mobilize party members to follow Wontumi, as NPP leaders are doing,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi has been at the centre of controversy over an illegal mining issue. Mr Asiedu Nketiah said the NPP should leave him to deal with the consequences of his actions rather than rallying around him.
“The NPP should allow Chairman Wontumi to carry his own cross because he himself knows he is guilty. The way NPP leaders are handling Wontumi’s illegal mining issue will cost the party in the 2028 elections,” he added.
The NDC national chairman said the conduct of the opposition party’s leadership could also affect the credibility of its criticism of the government.
He said a strong opposition was important to Ghana’s political system because it should be able to scrutinise the governing party and challenge its decisions constructively.
“As Chairman of the governing party, I believe we need a strong opposition to constructively criticize government. But with what NPP leaders are doing, Ghanaians will never take them seriously, even if they criticize constructively,” he said.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s remarks combine criticism of the NPP’s internal condition with a warning about the possible political consequences of its handling of Chairman Wontumi’s illegal mining case.
He said the party’s current approach could weaken its public standing ahead of the 2028 elections, while also making it less effective when seeking to hold the government to account.
