Lawrence Agyekum on target for Cercle Brugge in defeat to Beerschot

In Saturday’s Belgian First Division A relegation group clash at the Olympisch Stadion, Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum put Cercle Brugge ahead inside six minutes; but his opener proved a mere footnote as Beerschot mounted a dramatic comeback to win 4–2.

Agyekum, grabbed his third goal of the season when he met Erick Nunes’s perfectly weighted pass and slotted home from the edge of the box. The midfielder, trusted in defensive and attacking duties throughout his 34th appearance of the campaign, drove Cercle ahead against the run of play before being substituted on the hour mark.

Despite heading into the interval in the lead, Cercle were undone by a rapid-fire response after the break. Apostolos Konstantopoulos struck twice within three minutes—rocketing home from distance in the 48th minute and then capitalizing on a defensive mix-up two minutes later. Moments later, Loïc Mbe Soh and Faisal Al-Ghamdi each converted spot-kicks to extend Beerschot’s advantage and dampen Brugge’s hopes of a recovery.

Paris Brunner’s stoppage-time finish offered scant consolation for Cercle, who mustered just 37 percent possession and fired only 13 attempts compared to Beerschot’s 23.

Key Statistics

  • Possession: Cercle Brugge 37 % – Beerschot 63 %
  • Shots (on target): Cercle Brugge 13 (5) – Beerschot 23 (9)
  • Corners: Cercle Brugge 4 – Beerschot 7

The result tightens the relegation group standings, with Beerschot moving within striking distance of safety and Cercle Brugge’s survival hopes now resting on their final two fixtures. Cercle travel to KV Kortrijk next weekend, while Beerschot host Zulte Waregem, both games carrying significant implications in the battle to avoid the drop.
