England-born Ghanaian defender Kwame Boateng has joined Scottish League One club Airdrieonians after departing English non-league side Cleethorpes Town.
The 27-year-old has signed for Airdrieonians following a career that has included spells with Bradford City, Harrogate Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Welsh champions The New Saints.
Boateng is described as a versatile defender and can operate at both centre-back and full-back. His arrival gives Airdrieonians another experienced option in defence as they prepare for the 2026/27 Scottish League One campaign.
Airdrieonians head coach John Rankin said Boateng had made a strong impression during pre-season before being offered a contract.
The defender’s move to the Scottish club represents his latest step in British football, having previously played in England and Wales. His most recent club was Cleethorpes Town, from whom he joined Airdrieonians.
Boateng completed the move after convincing the Airdrieonians coaching staff that he was deserving of the opportunity. Rankin’s assessment came after the defender had worked with the squad during preparations for the new season.
His ability to play in more than one defensive position is expected to be an important part of his role at the club. Boateng can provide cover in central defence as well as at full-back, while his previous experience offers further depth to Airdrieonians’ back line.
The defender has already featured for a number of established British clubs. His career has taken him to Bradford City, Harrogate Town and Sheffield Wednesday, before a spell with The New Saints, the Welsh champions. He later continued in English non-league football with Cleethorpes Town.
For Boateng, the move brings a new challenge in Scottish football. He will now look to establish himself with Airdrieonians and use the experience gained across his previous clubs to help strengthen the team.
Airdrieonians are targeting a successful 2026/27 Scottish League One campaign, and Boateng will hope to contribute wherever he is required across the defence.
