Kofi Adams says new Sports Fund will solve Ghana’s long-standing funding challenges

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says the proposed Sports Fund will finally provide a sustainable solution to Ghana’s long-running sports financing problems.

Adams laid the Sports Fund Bill before Parliament on Thursday, outlining a long-term framework to support all sporting disciplines — not just football.

He noted that funding constraints have repeatedly stalled the development of many federations and athletes across the country.

“It’s quite clear that over the years, this house has had challenges dealing with issues that affect funding for sports in general. Most of the time, resources go mainly to football, when sports in this country go far beyond that,” he said.

Adams stressed that once the fund is approved, it will ensure steady support for athletes, associations, and development programmes nationwide.

“When approved, we will not have these challenges of financing our sports. Sports will grow, bring development, and strengthen the progressive activities we pursue in this country,” he added.

The Sports Fund will be financed through Parliamentary allocations, sports lotteries, betting levies, gate proceeds, athlete transfer fees, sponsorships, grants, and contributions from international federations.
