Karim Benzema explains how he modelled game on Cristiano Ronaldo –

Karim Benzema has revealed that he tried to model his game on Cristiano Ronaldo during the pair’s time together at Real Madrid.

Benzema and Ronaldo both arrived in the Spanish capital during the 2009 summer transfer window and went on to form a fruitful partnership in the final third. Together they won a staggering four Champions Leagues alongside two La Liga titles.

Benzema often acted as a facilitator to the free-scoring Ronaldo and the Frenchman has revealed that he relished the chance to learn from his teammate.

“When I watched what he did, I tried to concentrate on his movements: the dribbling, the finishing, the passing, his ball handling, I dissected everything about him,” Benzema told Onze Mondial.

“But, then it’s impossible to achieve the same thing.”

Listen now to 90min’s brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott SaundersGraeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week they discuss whether Sadio Mane will leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich, Manchester United’s pursuit of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, Newcastle’s plans for Moussa Diaby and Sven Botman & Jorginho’s future at Chelsea.

Ironically, since Ronaldo has left the club Benzema has taken his game to the next level. The 2021/22 campaign was the best of his career to date with the forward netting a stunning 44 goals in 46 games.

Benzema’s displays were particularly important as Real completed a string of dramatic comebacks en route to the Champions League final, where they beat Liverpool 1-0.

He added: “I still have a lot of things in my head. I want to win more titles, more Champions Leagues. And with the national team, the World Cup. That’s all I have as a dream.”
