England midfielder Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year contract after his deal with Brentford was mutually terminated.
The 36-year-old, who captained Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2019-20, becomes the 10th player to arrive at Chelsea since new manager Xabi Alonso took charge.
Henderson also won the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup during his 12-year spell at Anfield.
“Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Henderson.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Henderson began his career with Sunderland and made his Premier League debut for the club as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on 1 November, 2008.
He made his England debut in 2010 and has won 91 caps. The midfielder has represented the Three Lions at seven major international tournaments, including the 2021 European Championship final, when England lost to Italy on penalties.
This summer, Henderson became the first Englishman to play at four different World Cups when he came on as a late substitute in England’s 2-0 win over Panama.
That proved to be his only appearance at the tournament, after he suffered a broken arm in unusual circumstances.
Henderson had not played in England’s 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico, but was injured after trying to jump over the advertising hoardings beside the pitch following the game. Earlier in the match, he had been booked for criticising an officials’ decision while warming up.
The midfielder moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before joining Dutch side Ajax in January 2024. He returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer and made 32 top-flight appearances in 2025-26.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one point and one place behind Brentford, and did not qualify for European football.
Alonso has overseen a significant overhaul of the squad during the summer transfer window. Chelsea agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers, 23, from Aston Villa, while 35-year-old England striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton in a reported £5m move on Saturday.
Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco arrived on Sunday, while defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, joined from Crystal Palace for £52m. Right-back Marco Palestra, 21, moved from Atalanta for £42m and right-winger Geovany Quenda signed from Sporting for £40m.
Chelsea’s other new additions are 23-year-old striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, 18-year-old left-back Denner from Corinthians and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.
There has also been movement in the opposite direction, with Como agreeing a deal worth more than £30m on Monday to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.
