England midfielder Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year contract after reaching a mutual agreement to end his deal with Brentford.

The 36-year-old brings extensive Premier League and international experience to a Chelsea side that finished 10th in the top flight last season, one place and one point behind Brentford. The London club missed out on European football but have been active in the transfer market under new manager Xabi Alonso, with Henderson becoming their 10th signing of the summer.

“Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Henderson.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson captained Liverpool when they won the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season. During his time at Anfield, he also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.

He began his career at Sunderland, where he came through the academy and made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on 1 November 2008.

Henderson made his England debut in 2010 and has won 91 caps. He has represented the Three Lions at seven major international tournaments, including the 2021 European Championship final, when England lost to Italy on penalties.

This summer, Henderson became the first Englishman to play at four different World Cups when he came on as a late substitute during England’s 2-0 win over Panama. It was his only appearance of the tournament, however, after he suffered a broken arm in unusual circumstances.

Henderson had not featured in England’s 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico but was booked during the match for criticising an official’s decision while warming up. After the final whistle, he attempted to jump over the advertising hoardings at the side of the pitch, fell awkwardly and sustained the injury.

He moved from Liverpool to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before joining Ajax in January 2024. Henderson returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer and made 32 top-flight appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

Chelsea have already agreed a club-record £117m fee for England midfielder Morgan Rogers, 23, from Aston Villa. England striker Danny Welbeck, 35, joined from Brighton in a reported £5m move on Saturday, while Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco arrived on Sunday.

Defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, has moved from Crystal Palace for £52m. Chelsea have also signed 21-year-old right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £42m and 18-year-old right-winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £40m.

The club’s other arrivals are 23-year-old striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, 18-year-old left-back Denner from Corinthians and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.

Chelsea have also been involved in player departures. Como agreed a deal worth more than £30m on Monday to sign defender Trevoh Chalobah.
