Jeremie Frimpong urges bold reforms to stabilize Ghana Football

Dutch-born defender of Ghanaian heritage, Jeremie Frimpong, has called on Ghana’s football authorities to prioritize stability as a key factor in revitalizing the sport. His comments come in the wake of a difficult period for Ghanaian football, marked by the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years. Ghana ended the qualifiers at the bottom of Group F, managing only three points.

In addition to the national team’s struggles, Ghanaian clubs have also found it challenging to leave a mark in continental competitions. Dreams FC’s semi-final run in the CAF Confederation Cup remains the country’s most notable achievement in recent years.

Frimpong, who plays for Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, follows developments in Ghanaian football through social media. He believes that establishing a stable framework similar to Europe’s can help drive improvement.

“In Europe, the system is very well-organized. I’m not saying things are bad here [in Ghana], but the structure in Europe is much more stable,” Frimpong explained in an interview with Pan-Africa Football.

Although he admitted he has never watched the Ghanaian league, Frimpong emphasized the importance of a reliable system. “In Europe, there are hardly any issues—no cancellations or disruptions. Everything runs smoothly. If Ghana can bring that kind of stability, the game will definitely improve,” he added.

Frimpong has been in excellent form this season, making 16 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring twice, and registering five assists.
