Inter could extend the contract of defender Stefan de Vrij in the event that he is not sold this summer after all.
This according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.com, who report that the Nerazzurri had a promise from the Dutchman’s agent that if he does not leave this summer for a fee he will not leave next summer at the end of his current deal.
De Vrij’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June 2023, and the expectation has been that the Nerazzurri would look to sell the 30-year-old this summer rather than try to renew his deal.
Chelsea and Manchester United are still keen and so a departure is not out of the question, but this looks less and less probable as the summer transfer window moves forward without further steps being taken by either club.
Inter had been in contact with de Vrij’s agent prior to the summer and indicated that he would be free to leave if a new club that would pay an appropriate fee would be found, and this was the expectation for his future.
However, a promise was also secured that he would not depart on a free transfer, and so if de Vrij is not sold after all, it is very possible that his deal will be extended past next summer.
