Gianni Infantino’s ambition to secure a major new source of funding for FIFA has turned into one of the biggest crises of his presidency after he abandoned the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise project.
The FIFA president confirmed in a statement issued in the early hours of 1 August 2026 that the plan would not go ahead, following widespread opposition from continental football bodies, internal resignations and strong criticism.
The decision came only days after the project was announced at the end of July. It was designed to establish a commercial company valued at about $20bn, with responsibility for managing FIFA’s commercial rights and the organisational operations connected to its major competitions.
Those tournaments included the men’s and women’s World Cups, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.
Under the proposal, as much as 20% of the new company would have been sold to private-sector investors. That minority stake was expected to raise about $4.2bn, while FIFA also promised that member associations would receive substantial additional funding.
Instead, the initiative quickly became the centre of a growing institutional and political dispute. Opposition spread across the continents, while resignations within FIFA added to the pressure on Infantino and the project’s supporters.
In his statement, Infantino acknowledged that the plan had “caused divisions” that no longer served its central purpose. He then made clear that FIFA Forward Enterprise “will not move forward”.
The announcement represented more than the cancellation of a commercial scheme. It marked a sharp setback for Infantino, who had been regarded until recently as one of the most powerful figures in world sport.
The speed of the collapse was particularly damaging. A project presented as a route towards greater financial support for FIFA’s members was unable to survive the scale of opposition that emerged within days of its launch.
The proposed company was intended to bring together important elements of FIFA’s commercial and tournament activity under one structure. Its projected value and the potential $4.2bn investment were central to the plan, as were the promises of increased financial distributions to the organisation’s member associations.
However, the combination of continental resistance, resignations and criticism forced the FIFA president into a formal retreat. His statement on 1 August ended the initiative before it could progress any further.
Infantino took office as FIFA president in 2016. The failure of FIFA Forward Enterprise has now transformed the narrative around his leadership: an attempt to deliver a major expansion of FIFA’s financial backing has instead left him facing deepening isolation and a serious crisis of authority.
