Inaki Williams and brother Nico Williams reject to play for Ghana ahead of 2022 World Cup – Report

Inaki Williams and Nico Williams have rejected the opportunity to play for Ghana, the ‘Mundo Deportivo’ newspaper has reported.

The two Athletic Bilbao players have been strongly linked to play for the West African country ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The two brothers have been in the West African country for holidays.

However, the possibility of representing the ‘Black Stars’ generated some expectation in Ghana but, for now, the Williams brothers will be focused only on playing for the club side.

Footballghana.com has reported that the president of the Ghana Football Association [GFA], Kurt Okraku has held talks with the parents of the brother and they had earlier accepted to feature for the country.

And not even the possibility of participating in a football World Cup seems attractive enough to make them change their minds.

Inaki, the eldest of the brothers, did not hide his pride in his roots, as he showed in a post on social media. “My ancestors, my blood,” wrote the forward.

Inaki even admitted that this possibility could be interpreted as an act of disrespect towards players who were born in the country in an interview in the Guardian newspaper.

Remember that Iñaki has already been called up by Spain, in a friendly game which make him still eligible to play for Ghana.

Nico has not represented Spain at the senior level but has made a couple of appearances for the U18 and U21 teams.

Inaki expressed reservations about switching nationalities for Ghana in an interview last year, saying, “My parents are from Accra, and I really enjoy going. But

“I wasn’t born or raised there, my culture is here, and there are players who would mean more.”

“I don’t think it would be right to take the place of someone who really deserves to go and feels Ghana 100%,” he added.
