Ilkay Gundogan set for surprise summer departure from Man City

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan is in line for a surprise departure from the club this summer, according to reports.

The latest word on Gundogan’s future comes by way of Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, who has revealed that the German was informed during a recent meeting that he is free to find a new club ahead of next season.

It does not appear as though Gundogan is being forced out by any means, with his predicted exit ‘set against an amicable backdrop’.

Instead, the 31-year-old is understood to have come to a point in his career where he expects to be afforded a starting berth on a weekly basis, leaving his 20 appearances from the off across the Premier League campaign to date some way short of Gundogan’s expectations.

The German, courted by Real Madrid in the past, was spotted boarding a flight to the Spanish capital earlier today, albeit with it currently unclear whether or not the trip came with a potential transfer in mind.

Villans test

Gundogan will no doubt be hopeful of featuring from the off this weekend, in what could ultimately prove to be his final outing in the colours of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s troops are of course set to play host to Aston Villa on Sunday evening, aware that a victory will see them guaranteed of another Premier League title.

This comes with the Citizens currently sitting pretty atop the English top-flight, four points clear of closest challengers Liverpool, albeit with the Reds in possession of a game in hand, set to play out on Tuesday night at Southampton.
