Asamoah Gyan has forgiven Luis Suarez for the infamous handball incident at the 2010 World Cup, saying “I would have done the same thing if I was Luis Suarez because he did it to save his country”. Gyan, who missed the resulting penalty, acknowledged that while Suarez’s actions were a “cheat code,” he understands why he did it.
“I would have done the same thing if I was Luis Suarez because he did it to save his country. Although the ball was going in, it was a cheat code, and we had the opportunity and we didn’t convert it,” Gyan said in an interview with Rio Ferdinand.
Gyan has since put the incident behind him, stating he’s forgiven Suarez and recognizes he would’ve done the same in his shoes.
The incident denied Ghana a spot in the semi-finals, but Gyan has moved on, saying the experience made him stronger.
Suarez, on the other hand, has never apologized for his actions, saying he would do it again to save his country.
