I had no final say on player selection – Charles Akonnor

Former Black Stars gaffer Charles Akonnor has been speaking about his time with the team.

The coach was dismissed after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Akonnor has revealed he was not entirely in charge of squad selection during his time with the team.

This is public knowledge,” he said when quizzed about players being imposed on him.

“Many people out there just talk but they have no idea what was happening inside. Apart from Covid, it was a challenge controlling player call-ups.”

The 48-year-old went ahead to claim the frustration he had to go through as a result of the influence almost forced him not to call some players again.

“[Having a final say on player selection] was always a challenge,” he added.

“There were times I was so frustrated and I didn’t want to call certain players. It got to a point I wasn’t going to call Emmanuel Lomotey again.”

Ghana went on to play the 2021 Afcon and were eliminated in the group stages.

After qualifying the Black Stars to the 2022 Fifa World Cup, head coach Otto Addo leads the team against Portugal Nov 24.
