Egypt’s national team coach Hossam Hassan has strongly criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for changing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) schedule to every four years, starting from 2028.
“Organising the AFCON every four years does nothing for African football — it’s a decision made to suit Europe,” Hassan said, expressing his disappointment.
“I am Egyptian and proud to be African. Africa deserves better”.
Hassan believes the decision favors European clubs and players at the expense of African football. He questions CAF’s authority to change the format, asking, “Can CAF change the format of the European Championship? Of course not”.
The change has sparked debate among football stakeholders, with some arguing it will impact African football development.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe defended the decision, citing benefits for African football and increased prize money.
