Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has come to the defense of Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, insisting the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has performed exactly as required during the World Cup qualifiers.

The 32-year-old has kept five consecutive clean sheets, yet some fans have questioned his performances, claiming he has not been truly tested against stronger opposition.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Pappoe dismissed those concerns, arguing that Asare has met every expectation placed on him.

“I don’t know why people are making an issue of it,” he said. “The man has been given a job to do, and he – Benjamin Asare – is doing the job, so what is our point?”

He stressed that Asare’s role is simple to prevent goals and that he has done so effectively throughout the qualifying campaign.

“We put him into the goalpost to make sure we don’t have balls entering our net… and he is doing just that. It’s not a call we should be making now,” Pappoe added.

As Ghana prepares for their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Sunday, Asare is expected to retain his place in goal as the Black Stars aim to secure the single point needed to book their place at the tournament in North America.
