Ghanaian football legend Michael Essien has heaped praise on Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, declaring he would choose Partey over himself during their respective prime years.
This surprising endorsement appears to settle the long-standing debate among Ghanaians over who stands as the greatest midfielder between the two.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Essien expressed his admiration for Partey’s exceptional talent.
“Between myself and Thomas Partey in prime, I don’t think I will pick myself. I will go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know.
“He is a talented player making waves in Europe. He is one player I’d liked to play alongside, but it will never happen. It is their time at the Black Stars now, so we have to support them and hopefully, they can take it from where we left off.”
Essien enjoyed a glittering career with Chelsea, winning the UEFA Champions League, two Premier League titles, and several FA Cups, among other accolades.
Partey, meanwhile, has established himself as one of Europe’s elite midfielders.
The Arsenal star boasts an impressive résumé, including triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Europa League, and La Liga during his tenure with Atlético Madrid.
