Minister of Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has assured that the government is taking urgent steps to resolve the Black Queens’ outstanding bonuses ahead of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Egypt.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Kwakye Ofosu described the situation as “unfortunate” but said Sports Minister Kofi Adams was actively engaging relevant authorities to ensure the issue was settled promptly.
“It’s a bit unfortunate, but thankfully it appears that there is some resolution in sight,” he said. “At least yesterday, I thought I saw them show up for training, which is a good sign.”
He commended the players’ decision to return to training after their two-day boycott, describing it as a show of faith in the ongoing efforts to address their grievances.
“The delay is not acceptable, but I think that the Sports Minister is working hard with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that it is resolved. Going forward, we should avoid that in future,” Kwakye Ofosu added.
The Black Queens had refused to train following their return from Egypt, where they recorded a 3–0 first-leg win in the 2026 WAFCON qualifier. Each player is reportedly owed $9,500 in bonuses from their bronze-winning campaign at the 2024 tournament in Morocco.
After meetings with GFA President Kurt Okraku and senior government officials, the team resumed training at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday evening.
Ghana will host Egypt this afternoon at 15:30 GMT, aiming to secure qualification for next year’s WAFCON.
