Girona FC consider move for Ghana defender Abdul Mumin after Rayo Vallecano departure

Ghana international Abdul Mumin has reportedly become a transfer target for Girona FC after leaving Rayo Vallecano as a free agent during the current summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old centre-back officially became available on 1 July, bringing an end to his four-year spell with Rayo Vallecano. Mumin joined the Madrid-based club from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes in September 2022 and went on to establish himself as a reliable option in defence.

During his time with Rayo Vallecano, Mumin made 63 La Liga appearances. He also scored three goals and provided one assist for the club, contributing at both ends of the pitch during his spell in Spain.

Girona FC are understood to be monitoring the defender as they assess their options before the new La Liga season. However, no agreement has been reached and the club’s interest has not yet resulted in a completed move.

Mumin’s previous experience in Portugal could also make him an attractive option. Before moving to Spain, he played 51 Liga Portugal matches for Vitoria Guimaraes, having started his European career with Danish club FC Nordsjælland.

The defender’s 2025/26 campaign was affected by a lengthy absence after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Despite that setback, he recovered in time to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His return to fitness has come as he considers the next stage of his club career. Following the end of his contract with Rayo Vallecano, Mumin is now available without a transfer fee, although the reported interest from Girona FC has not yet developed into a formal agreement.

Mumin spent four years with Rayo Vallecano after arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes and leaves with 63 La Liga appearances to his name. His record in Spain, combined with his earlier experience in Liga Portugal, has reportedly drawn the attention of Girona FC as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

The proposed move would keep Mumin in La Liga, where he has already gained extensive experience. For now, though, Girona FC are only monitoring the Ghanaian defender, with discussions yet to produce a confirmed transfer.
